What to Do About Insurance If You Are Self-Employed

Affordable health care coverage is something everyone is concerned about. The lack of it, of course, is the biggest concern. Closely followed by inadequate coverage.

Here are some statistics from the US Census Bureau:

  • The percentage of the nation’s population without health insurance coverage remained unchanged, at 15.7 percent in 2004.

  • The percentage of people covered by employment-based health insurance declined from 60.4 percent in 2003 to 59.8 percent in 2004.

  • The percentage of people covered by government health insurance programs rose in 2004, from 26.6 percent to 27.2 percent, driven by increases in the percentage of people with Medicaid coverage, from 12.4 percent in 2003 to 12.9 percent in 2004.

  • The proportion and number of uninsured children did not change in 2004, remaining at 11.2 percent or 8.3 million.
  • Maybe those percentages don't seem high until you take into account the total US population. 8.3 million children without health care insurance.  Scary, huh?

When my ex-husband and I first married he was self-employed in the construction field. I was in fear all the time that me, my husband, or one of our 7 kids would get sick or be in an accident and we would be ruined overnight.

This is one the biggest things you will need to consider when you decide to work from home as a contracted worker or when you decide to start your own business.

Where can you go for help? Our blogger over at Small Biz Mentor lists a great resource within her post about this same subject. You can also read this article from Monster. For those that plan on starting their own business after retirement there is this article on About.

The point is you need to do your homework here before you work from home! Find out if there are others in your same field that would like to form a small group or insurance pool, thereby saving on rates and getting better coverage. Shop around before you decide and ask tons of questions about deductibles, limits, catostrophic coverage, dental, and more.

Great point on forming a group to you can create an insurance pool. I hadn't considered that approach for work from home folks.
