One of the perks of working from home is the ability to literally work in your pjs IF you have a job that allows that attire. If you have clients coming and going or deliveries or employees you will need to dress up a bit more!No matter what kind of telecommuting job you have, sooner or later you will have a meeting to attend-at your bank, home office, clients business, even running erands (if you are hoping to network and drum up business). If you are out of practice in dressing up you might not get it right! Dress for success is an overused phrase but an underutilized tool. First impressions can mean everything and you never know when you are going to need that first impression.
Here are some tips for dressing the part:
- Grooming: This is the easiest and yet most overlooked aspect of looking the part. Clean and trim nails, fresh haircut, carefully groomed beard or mustache, fresh breath, etc.
- Conservative: It is always safest to dress conservatively (unless you are in the business of trendy, funky, etc.). Choose neutral colors, classic slacks, skirts, tops, and shoes. Go light on the accessories.
- Proper fit: Make sure your clothes don't fit too tight or too loose. Make sure they are comfortable and don't show too much leg, cleavage or waist.
These basic tips are the same for job seekers. You should go through your closet and have a ready-to-go outfit picked out in case you are called in for a meeting or you have a client ask if you can pop over for a minute. Heck, get dressed up once and awhile and treat yourself to a lunch out.
