Customer Service and the Work From Home Mom
Moms are all about service, caring for little ones, husbands, stray animals, neighbors, and the community. If they don't know how to give good customer service who does?

One of the downfalls to working from home is the isolation that you can let yourself fall into. You are out of the loop on current business trends, customer service techniques, and employee motivation to name just a few subjects. It is up to you to review your business practices and see where improvement might be needed.

If you have customers then you need to keep up to date on what their needs are, their likes and dislikes, and what they think of you, your products, and your customer service. Here are some customer service tips:
  • Stay in communication with your customers without hovering. Make random calls asking about what they like and don't like. Ask where improvements can be made or what other services or products they would like to see you offer.
  • Offer incentives or thank yous for customers that do share their opinions with you, solicited or not. Do the same anytime they refer a friend to you and your business.
  • Read up on customer service tips and advice in business publications such as our blog Customers Are Always.
  • Make it a point to get to know your customers by first name and then use it in your transactions with them.

These are just a few of the ways you can make and keep customers. Since you are the only one that can make a difference you need to be proactive about customer service!

» Customer Service Tips From a Work-At-Home-Momma from CustomersAreAlways
I have a friend who works at home and takes care of her four boys(!).  I don't know how she does it, but I have much respect for her and all the mom's who can juggle all of that and... [Read More]

These are very good points and should not be passed over if you ae serious about your business.

Service is sacrificing for the needs of others and yes moms are great at this they do and understand service in this way. However the one thing that moms and others are not very good at is staying on top of their communication skills.

If you have a business this has to be primary and is center to good customer service. Make yourself available to your customers, don't hide. Unfortunately in most homebased businesses we do hide and isolate. This is however a bad practice.

The more visible you are the more your potential and current customers will trust you. This is primary to closing sales.

Get a good email management program and learn to respond quickly (24 hrs or less) to all your email. I recommend Maillop 6.0 by the Internet Marketing group. Its easy and highly effective and reliable including unlimited auto responders, also plenty of tutoring. http://www.marketingtips.com/mailloop/t.x/864834/

All in all don't get lazy about keeping in touch with your customers and the market place. Many, many online home based businesses go bust because of the lack of transparent communication. Don't you be one.

Ellen & Tim,

Thanks for your comments! Communication skills are something none of us can afford to ignore!

I have to totally agree. Customer Service can make or break your business. I make it a point to answer my emails within 24 hours or less. I had a bad experience with a supplier in which they wouldn't respond to my emails and didn't ship me an order for me. I was so ticked and I ended up refunding the customers money. Believe me, I will not be doing business with that company again. If you want to be a success with your business, you need to offer 'top notch' customer service.

Trisha,

It sets good business apart from bad business doesn't it? Thanks for your comments!

Marta
