Your work-from-home business is booming and you think you need to get some help? You have now entered another dimension. What are some of the concerns and issues you need to deal with if you are going from self-employed to employer?
- Taxes
- Insurance (liability, workmans comp)
- Where will they work? (your home, theirs)
- Payroll (timeliness, accounting)
- Hours of operation
- Zoning issues
You could compare it to living a life of a bachelor to getting married. Some changes will have to made and loss of freedom might be the price paid.
Employment taxes can consist of hiring them as independent contractors where they pay their own taxes and you 1099 them (for anything over $600) or you pay your share of employment, medicare etc. taxes.
Will they be working in your home? If so what personal space issues will you need to deal with? How will you separate your family life from your employees? What about safety issues, especially if you are a work at home mom.
If you have employees working from your home what will your neighbors think? Will you be breaking any zoning laws?
These are just some questions to get you thinking. Start your research early before you actually think you will need to hire someone to help you out. This will save you last minute grief and frustration as well as ensure you don't have company down time because of lack of help.

Martha, I was wondering how home business leaders could see itself as an extravagant offering to others in our tme, and how they could convey that message to others who wish to improve their situation. Any advice? Ellen
