I came across this article from last year and wondered how many of us work-from-home women fit this mold? Working at Home Works for This Mom and it also seems to work for her full-time dad/husband.
She gives a great example of how to separate work from family but still enjoy the benefits of working from home. I concur that when the kids are home and having a good time it can be a bit hard not to want to get up and join them. The best benefit is that on occasion you can!!
If you have a separate home office that makes it possible to close the door and keep the animals at bay that is great. For those of us that don't have that luxury other barriers must be put up in place of actual walls and doors.
My barrier is trying to work around my family's schedule. While the kids are away the work-at-home mom cannot play! After school is out we work on homework, mine too, and then I work again after they are in bed.
Now if I had a stay-at-home honey bunny........
When I use the phone or talk through Skype on the computer (which, by the way, is an extremely wonderful tool for work at home moms and dads) I also make use of the mute button. The key is to remember to hit mute BEFORE you yell at your son to let his brother out of the choke hold!
If you do a large portion of work on your computer and you only have one you should look into a second computer for the kids. Not only will that cut down on time that you have to give it up so your kids can print out their school reports you also have a back up system which can come in quite handy.
Oops! Gotta go! WWF (or should I say WWE) has nothing on my boys!

Marta,
I can relate to this!!! Most people do not realize what they are getting into when they decide to work from home, there are good and bad things to look at. I love working from home, and if you can deal with working around your families schedule and keeping your children "settled" or "happy" so you can get some work done, that is a big plus. Thanks for posting this!
