Then maybe direct sales is for you! More commonly known as home party businesses, direct selling companies such as Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, Avon, and Tupperware offer wonderful products. They also offer the opportunity for you to share the business with recruits. This part works like an MLM company in that regard but the difference, and a huge difference it is, is that there is no hiding of the name. These companies are proud of their products and the business opportunities they offer men and women who want to start their own businesses.
To be successful in home sales, you need to be organized, be ready for some hard work, and prepare yourself for rejection. Home parties have been so done to death that the mere site of a little postcard inviting you to one can have you thinking up some good excuses. Although I am a hard worker the organization and rejection factors made me give up my direct sales business. I did make money and for the right person this could be the perfect work-from-home scenario.
If you are considering the direct selling option take a look at this website for a dearth of information on direct selling companies Domestic Tranquility. You will also find information on work-from-home jobs that are not related to direct selling.
Find out everything about the company you are considering signing up with. If possible, ask for the materials without a sit-down meeting with your recruiter. No matter the company you are going to get the hard sell. If you have the materials ahead of time you can work up your list of very important questions to ask. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement and forget that you are making a big decision especially if you are considering inventory purchases.
My advice here, which will go exactly against your recruiter's advice, is to start out small. That way you can determine what sells and what doesn't etc. Yeah, you might sell more if you have the inventory handy but then again you might not. Starting small allows you to budget your investment monies better.
Go to a few home parties with your recruiter so you can see them in action. Ask about typical expenses, average hours worked, and even their profit margin. Sit down and figure out how much time you can devote to your business and if your family will support you in your decision. That was one of the reasons I had to give up on my direct selling business. I had twins and and a husband who said he supported me but seemed to forget the schedule we had for watching my little guys so I could attend to my sales.
You can make a living through direct sales but it isn't going to be easy. Just be realistic, set goals, don't give up and wear bulky sweaters until your thick skin begins to grow!
